So, the RWA National Conference is going to be in ORLANDO!! Holy Disney Passes, Batman! I've got some rearranging to do...
Still trying to work out departure details here, but this'll be a first for me. I was in Disneyland (CA) once when I was 15. I've never been to Disney World. I was, however, a big fan of "The New Mickey Mouse Club" when I was in about 4th grade. Who else remembers those toe-tapping musical numbers "Discovery Day" and "Climb Aboard to a Dream," hmm?
Anyway, I just wanted to say: People of Nashville, you're still in my thoughts. RWA Board and Conference Committee, you ladies are amazing--thank you! And everyone out there who's been to Orlando, help! What are the "Can't Miss" spots??!

Sorry--no help here, but I'm working the web like a fiend! As long as they have a bar, I'm fine. ;-)
In my other incarnation and when I worked for Levi's, we had a sales meeting at the very same resort (same two hotels even) but I was so busy with meeting stuff that I didn't get to use my theme park pass or anything.
Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on perspective), my brother, sister-in-law and nephew were on their way through and stopped to stay with me. My nephew tells me that he had a fabulous time! The point of this long story is that I'll call my brother to see if he can give me some tour guide type advice on what is must see, okay?
Pamela, I've been assured that one can order fruity cocktails at any time and relax with them by the pool!
Pamala, if you or your brother have any suggestions, I'd welcome them (!!), but I'm probably insane for thinking I'll have time to see or do anything that's not specifically conference related ;).
LOL, well, Marilyn, the resort is on Disney property, so there's always all those theme parks! Downtown Disney (not on Disney property) is a lot of fun at night. Let me warn you though, if you, though, the whole place will be like a sauna that time of year!
I think the board and conference committee are amazing, too.
I've been to Disney, but it was about ten years ago. We just did the usual, hitting all the Disney places. I think we went to Universal Studios, too. It was all fun.
I'm sooo bummed! Now I won't be going to Nationals. Nashville is in my backyard so it was a no brainer! We go to Disney EVERY year b/c our condo is only 45 minutes from there. We will be there 2 weeks before Nationals. With a family of six who fly a couple times a year, Nationals has now become a little too expensive. If only I'd known before now....I could've planned....sigh.
I second the vote for Downtown Disney. The parks are massive and require at least a full day to see. Downtown has lots of fun shops and great restaurants.
If you go, go into The House of Blues and have an order of VooDoo shrimp with rosemary corn bread for me. =)
Maria, I appreciate getting good tips from a Florida girl! Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely checkout downtown Disney ;).
Edie, I'm really curious about Universal Studios--glad you liked it! I'm sure it's incredibly fun and I love anything movie related...
Tonya~Oh, no!! I'm bummed for you... The change of plans made things much harder for me, too. I'd been really looking forward to being near enough to drive to Nashville, too. But next year is NYC--a great one to go to if you can!
Lainey, I just ate breakfast and you've made me hungry again! VooDoo Shrimp?! Rosemary corn bread?! OMG... :)
I've never been to Disney (or Florida) either! I'm very excited and wish I could stay extra days to see everything. Maybe we can hit a highlight together?
Robin~No matter what we do--Disney or not!--I'm just looking forward to seeing you ;).
**Wishing all the moms who see this note a very Happy Mother's Day tomorrow!!!!!!
I'm hoping to go to Nationals. I thought I couldn't go, and when I found out I could, well, you know what happened.
So I'm waiting desperately for registration to reopen. .
I agree. The people at RWA did a fantastic job dealing with everything.
Hope to see you there!
Melina, I'm still working on the details and travel plans, too--it's quite a change!! But I hope to see you there as well ;). p.s. Hope you got a lot of revising done this weekend!
Marilyn, you know how I feel about Disney! You'll be there at a pretty busy time of year (tons of kidlets running around on summer break) so my best suggestion is to take advantage of the FastPasses if you want to hit any of the more popular rides in the parks and just soak up the atmosphere! There will probably be people having meltdowns around you because they're trying to cram it all into one vacation but my favorite moments at Disney are when I just stroll around and notice small details. And, of course, I love getting photos with the characters. I also agree that Downtown Disney is awesome. It has a more 'grown up' feel to it. How awesome that you guys get to go there! My dad stayed at the Swan or the Dolphin (I can't remember which one) for an Allstate conference once and he said it was a really nice hotel. I believe they also have some pretty decent restaurants in them as well.
Lindsey!!! Yes, I know you're a Mickey fan ;). Thank you for the suggestions, too. I've seen FastPasses at 6 Flags, but I've never used them there. I can imagine they'd be very useful at a Disney theme park. I'm just worried *I'm* going to be one of those people having a meltdown--LOL. (Sending a big hug to you. :)
