Ups, Downs

The past couple of weeks have been a rollercoaster of events and emotions, some things tipping delightfully in my favor, others not so much. I'm overwhelmed and saddened by all that's been going on in the world lately: The volcanic eruptions in Iceland, the strains on the global economy, the BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf and, most recently, the horrible flooding in Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi...including Nashville, of course, where our summer RWA National Conference was supposed to be held. My heart goes out to all of the individuals, families and animals/sea creatures affected by these catastrophes. It reminds me again why it's so important to have friends and storytellers in our world. IMO, both help us find solace, meaning and connection amidst the sadness.

Thankfully, there are bits and pieces of good news, too: Writers I love who have new books coming out (so happy for you!), friends who continue to top Bestseller Lists (yay, Simone!), the successes of dear family members who persevered and now get to enjoy some well-deserved recognition (way to go, A!!) and even I have something happy to share... I was thrilled to get the call last week that According to Jane is a Best First Book Finalist in the 2010 Golden Quill! Many thanks to all of the judges for this tremendous honor.

This morning, I'm taking a deep breath (several, actually ;) and reminding myself that there's only so much I can control...but I need to do the best I can with those few things under my influence. With that thought in mind, I'm going to get offline and get some writing done. Right now, in fact!

Wishing you all good health and happiness today.

Congratulations Marilyn. Well done!

Yes, I too feel for all those poor innocent lives who suffer because of certain things happening in our oh so fragile world.

Congratulations!!!!! That's wonderful.

I feel bad for the people hurt by the weather and the oil spill. Like you say, we can't control it. I wish I could, but I'd probably make a bigger mess.

Happy writing!

Congrats on being a Golden Quill finalist--that's so exciting!!!

And yeah, it's been a little bit hard to watch the news lately, hasn't it? So much bad news... Maybe we'll have to have a positive blog day sometime soon!

**HUGE thanks to ALL of you for your congrats on the Golden Quill Final!! I was excited and truly appreciate your good wishes ;-).

Brande/Book Junkie~I was just over at your lovely blog this morning to see Blythe ;). Love your author Q&As!

Monique/Middle Ditch~Yes, the state of the world does seem awfully fragile as of late... Sigh. Hope things are going well for you in the U.K.

Edie~I'm having such a hard time dealing with my inability to (a) control these messes and (b) make them immediately better. It's so hard to just sit back and watch this stuff happen...

Pamela~LOVE your idea of a positive blog day! Name the date, and I'm IN!!

Nancy~I feel really lucky to get to share good news with such wonderful friends :).

Robin~Oh, I needed that hug! Thanks for the good writing wishes, too--I managed to get a little done...

Maria~That's so nice of you. Thanks, hon ;).

I am sitting here, sipping on a packet of my STARBUCKS!! Thanks you Marilyn! You are the BEST!!

I do wonder why all these 'acts of God' are happening. It seems once we get out of one disaster, another one happens. Plus with Nationals...I was going to drive b/c I'm only a couple hours away in Ky. Yes~we did have to move some of our family out of the flood zone and they did get flooded, but we have it down to a science now. It's not unusual for this to happen in KY.

I won't be able to attend if I have to get a plane ticket. We already have tickets for all six of my family members to go to our condo in Florida weeks before so $ just isn't there to throw into a plane...UNLESS, one of those wonderful agents who has my full manuscript, takes me as a client and sales my book in a couple months...HEY! Can't a gal dream?

It's exactly at times like these that we need books. There's only so long that you can marinate in disaster before you need to escape a while. When people diss romances or fantasies or mysteries, I feel sorry for them; after all, what do they do when they need to escape for a while? Because we all do.

Congratulations on your award! It's very well-deserved!

Tonya, so glad you got the package I sent and are liking the VIA!! ;) I'm waiting anxiously on word from RWA, too. I'd really been hoping to go by car this year--and to spend some time in Nashville--so it's a frustrating change of events. Glad to hear you and your family in KY are all fine, though. And fingers crossed on getting a sale soon, too!

Caryn~I really share your feelings on the importance of having good books within easy reach. We need to laugh, escape, learn about new places or get a fresh perspective...

Hugs back, Judy! Thank you!!! :)

Congratulations on the contest final! :-) Sorry to be a bit late to the party.

Yeah, things are rough right now. But great books (great point Caryn) and great writing communities make life so much better.

Marilyn Brant said...

Thanks, Brittany!! May there be LOTS of great world news for all of us and fabulous writing-related news for you! :-)

Melina!!!! Thank you for the congrats and for visiting me here. It's so lovely to see you ;). I think the only thing we can do when times get tough like this is to hold tight to our friends and loved ones, and to remember to be gentle with ourselves because we *are* trying our best... Some weeks are just hard. {hug}
