Toxic Personalities

I was going to try to write something interesting and insightful today but, alas, before I could even attempt to relax my monkey mind long enough to be appropriately reflective, most of the day was gone...

Thankfully, I came across this interesting and insightful article by Brett Blumenthal on 8 Toxic Personalities to Avoid, and I'll let it do my blogging job for me.

Love the Internet!

Incidentally, not to name names, of course, but I think we've all met a number of real-life people at one point in time or another who fit these categories. Sometimes I suspect we get so used to someone behaving in a toxic manner that we forget that it's a dysfunction...we start to see it as a mere character trait. And speaking of which, for those of us who are writers, you'll probably recognize some of your characters on this list, too. That was the first thing that struck me, actually, as I was reading the article. I wanted to wave and greet them by name. "Hey, David, look at you showin' up here. You've been busy, man."

Anyway, hope you all have a wonderful end to the month of May. And, in case you didn't catch this earlier, I'm drawing three names from all the May commenters and newsletter subscribers for summery According to Jane t-shirts this weekend. Hallelujah for warm weather!

Isn't it amazing how many of these personalities exist in a family?

I think that's the most fun about family reunions (from a writer's standpoint). There always exist the opportunity to watch and learn from those closest to us, then shamelessly use those observations in our writing. Te-He

Walking the mall is a great source as well. I'm constantily amazed at what I see.

Thanks for sharing the link.

I can think of so many people who fit these traits, but it also makes me wonder...do I qualify, and am just too clueless/self-absorbed to realize it? That's a little too much introspection before the morning coffee, though.

It's hard to believe May is nearly over, and June will go just as quickly. At least it brings us closer to October, and Jane!

Great link, thanks!

So hard to believe that it is almost June- which is ...like...summer. LOL -Not that it feels like summer outside.

Cheers!!

Sandra~Thanks for the tip on the mall! And, yes, I agree on the family watching...although I keep trying to convince my relatives that I'm *really not* using them as the basis for any of my characters :).

Erica~2009 is just zipping by, isn't it?! I'm all confused by the seasons now. My mind is still milling around the winter holidays, but we just got our pool passes last week...

Nancy~I'm so glad you liked the link and, also, I agree about the weather--esp. today! I want the dreary rain to stop.

Sadly, it's not always possible to avoid these in your family. I guess to just be aware of their effect is a good starting point.

Interesting article - I wonder which of those toxic personality types the author's family would put her in... maybe Know-it-all Nora? : )

'relax my monkey mind'...that's something interesting right there! Love it! See, even when you don't try, Marilyn, your posts are always fun for me to read!

I count myself as pretty lucky - no awful personality types in my family. I think that's why I have to work so hard to come up with conflict and less than noble character traits in my stories.

I hope you have a great weekend! :)

Well said, L.A.

Ha! I hadn't thought of that, Nadine :). But she's probably no different than most of us. I'd bet we're each someone else's "most difficult person"...

Robin~LOL! Glad you liked that line!! It's the tiny bit of Eastern philosophy in me trying to get out :). Hope you have a great weekend, too!

Wow, I think my mother-in-law fits about 5 of those categories. Woops. Did I say that?

Vesper~I think we all feel a little bit that way... Hope you have a wonderful weekend, too!
